Hillcrest Hospital Pryor is proud to serve Pryor and the surrounding communities. When you place your health in our hands, we take that responsibility to heart. The elimination of hospital acquired infections has been a top priority. When patients are hospitalized, their risk of acquiring an infection during that hospitalization increases. There are many factors that increase this risk such as immunosuppression, chronic illness, older age, hospital length of stay, exposure to infections pathogens and use of devices like urinary catheters and IVs, as well as invasive procedures.
Although not all risks can be eliminated, we have adopted strong infection control strategies that make hospitalization safer for our patients. We are continuously working to improve the care we provide for our patients, including our efforts to reduce the risk of hospital-acquired infections (HAIs).
Patient safety and infection risk reduction are our highest priorities. Over the two years, our staff has taken additional steps to protect patients from infections. Some of our efforts include:
- Good hand hygiene. This is the first line of defense in the prevention and spread of infection. We observe hundreds of staff members each month to ensure they wash their hands or use alcohol-based sanitizers between patients.
- Environmental cleaning. Using the right type of disinfectant, applied in the correct way, is vital for the agent to kill bacteria and viruses. Our cleaning agents are approved for hospital-level disinfection.
- Utilization of a “Central Line Bundle” that standardizes insertion, care and timely discontinuation through hand hygiene guidelines, use of maximal barrier protections during insertions, chlorhexidine skin antisepsis, optimal site selectin and daily review of the necessity of the line.
Even during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, we publicly reported zero Central Line Associated Blood Stream Infections (CLASBIs) to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).
